It is this unassuming nature that makes it truly appealing. Sidling in to an open and airy space, I was greeted warmly by the staff. The decor is diner meets New York chiq. Subway tiles, posh lighting, and an old metal fridge built-in behind the bar.Door was propped open. Brisk, if unseasonably warm air blows in. Memory in the making. This is a place made for sleepy afternoons. It will undoubtedly fill fast once discovered by the crowds coming in off the High Line with sunburned cheeks and smiles for the uncoordinated nature of a sticky New York summer day.
I ordered the turkey club and "sexy fries" -- featuring truffle oil, shaved cheese, and a variety of herbs. Service was at a good pace. TV featured a DVD on loop of "The Warriors" to look at whilst waiting.
The flavor of the fries was fresh, but could use a bit more time in the oven for the crisp we all seek. The turkey club was more understated than exceptional. Comforting in an expectant way. In character and on mission for the establishment:
"Gansevoort 69 respectfully acknowledges the working-class roots of the meatpacking district, serving traditional American comfort cuisine which utilizes local purveyors and reflects New York's rich bounty. Our mission is to elevate American comfort cuisine to its rightful place, as the heart and soul of our nation’s culinary identity." [source]In short, Gansevoort 69 does not pretend to be anything but what it is: a simple, snappy, downtown place worth a beer and a burger, a sandwich and soda, an impromptu gathering spot for friends on an affordable budget.
Find it, and weather the winter in warm company. Or shuffle down in shorts and sandals when summer hits. Just better hope the rest of the city doesn't discover it first.
